Born in New Jersey, Caroll K. Bassett was a leading steeplechase rider in the 1930s and winner of over 100 races. He won the U.S. Grand National and two National Steeplechase Hunt Cups (1933-34) on Mrs Marion duPont Scott's famous horse Battleship. After studying at the Art Students League in New York, he later became an accomplished equine sculptor.
