AN AXMINSTER CARPET OF SAVONNERIE DESIGN
Circa 1900
The dusty pink field with small geometric pattern around large eau-de-nil medallion with polychrome scrolling acanthus leaves and floral sprays, wide border of similar design and floral vases in corners, outer plain stripe
15'1"x 12'10" (460 X 391 cm.)

Specialist note

The carpet, woven in an earthen-red trellised-mosaic and wreathed by festive ribboned bands with an oval medallioned compartment in Louis XVI 'antique' fashion, celebrates the fruitfulness of the Earth Element. Flowered Vitruvian wave-scrolls, wreathed in Roman foliage, support Cybeles cornucopiae that accompany the palm-flowered and water-bubbled cartouches displayed in the hollowed corners.
