The hinged lid with a central tablet depicting the long library at Sledmere House, the sides decorated with landscape scenes depicting Sledmere House, the interior with applied label 'DOBBS & COMP'Y/Ornamental Staioners to HIS MAJESTY/13 Soho Square'
5 in. (12.7 cm.) high; 9 in. (23 cm.) wide; 7 in. (17.8 cm.) deep
Together with a Regency penwork writing slope, early 19th century, deocrated in the Chinoiserie taste, the sloping lid with Oriental figures in a watery landscape within a floral border, the interior with later bone counters -- 4¼ in. (10.8 cm.) high; 12 in. (30.5 cm.) wide; 10 in. (25.5 cm.) deep (2)

Specialist note

Sledmere House, Sledmere, Yorkshire, was built in 1751 and was greatly extended in the 1780s by Sir Christopher Sykes, 2nd Baronet (1749-1801). A catastrophic fire in 1911 left the house a shell and destroyed the Adam inspired interiors. These were restored along with the long library, which is today, known as one of the most beautiful rooms in England. Sledmere House is currently the home of Sir Tatton Sykes, 8th Baronet.
