Anonymous sale, Venduehuis der Notarissen, The Hague, 11 February 1930, lot 26. Kunsthandel Jacques Goudstikker, Amsterdam, inv.no. 3070, 1930's, where acquired by Mr H.E. ten Cate, Almelo, thence by descent to the present owners.

Specialist note

Dr D. Hannema wrote the following concerning the present lot: 'A red hussar, in his dark-blue uniform with red facings, is seen cantering across ground gently sloping up to the right. Beyond are, at different points, three more cavalry-men. On the left, in front of a wood, a squadron resting. The 'Red Hussars' were stationed at The Hague. Breitner made this finished watercolour about 1885.'
