Ruins of the Palace at Madurai
inscribed 'RUINS OF THE PALACE, MADURA' (lower centre, in the margin)
pencil and watercolour on paper
18¼ x 25in. (46.5 x 63.5cm.)
It has been suggested that some of the watercolour has been strengthened by a later hand.

Specialist note

The Daniells made several drawings of the palace which had been built at Madurai by Tirumala Nayak (1623-59), and included a series of views of it in Oriental Scenery, vol. 2, nos. 13-17. In 1871, the palace was substantially restored, under the supervision of the architect Robert Chisholm; nothing in the present view remains today except the gateway of the distant temple.
