EARLY 19TH CENTURY
The rectangular hinged top decorated with a compass rose and a map of the Cape Verde archipelago, the angles depicting scrolls inscribed 'Reino de Portugal' and 'Archipelago de Cabo Verde' respectively, within a simulated mosaic border, enclosing a cedar-lined interior, the frieze centred by a fruiting vine garland, with brass sunk handles
6 in. (15 cm.) high; 23¾ in. (60.5 cm.) wide; 16¼ in. (41 cm.) deep

Specialist note

Cape Verde is situated in the Atlantic Ocean around 600 km west-northwest of Senegal. The uninhabited islands were discovered and colonized by the Portuguese in the 15th century, later becoming a trading centre for African slaves and then an important coaling and resupply stop for whaling and transatlantic shipping.
