Lot 51 FURNITURE AT NOSTELL PRIORY, YORKSHIRE
Christopher Gilbert wrote that 'Nostell Priory is regarded by furniture historians very much as a flagship country house.' This is undoubtedly due to the wealth of publications relating to its design by the Yorkshire architect James Paine (d. 1789) and furnishings by cabinet-maker Thomas Chippendale (d. 1779) for Sir Rowland Winn, 4th Baronet (d. 1765), and Robert Adam, who took over the embellishment of the house from around 1756 for Sir Rowland Winn, 5th Baronet (d. 1786). The furnishings at Nostell during this period encapsulate the rich fusion of Palladian, Rococo, Chinese and Neo-classical styles.
In the 19th century, the formal Georgian state apartments were transformed into modern living apartments, and firms such as Gillows of London and Lancaster were commissioned to provide smart, elegant and practical bedroom furnishings, such as the two dressing-tables with their original rosewood handles (lots 52 and 53).
