Lot 554 The following two lots are from Margaret Mellis's contructivist period and show the influence of fellow artists Naum Gabo and Ben Nicholson. Having initially trained at the Edinburgh College of Art, Mellis won a post-graduate scholarship to study under André Lhote in Paris.
Between the years 1939 and 1946, Mellis and her first husband Andrew Stokes lived and worked alongside artists like Barbara Hepworth in St. Ives, Cornwall.
The compositions here deploy pieces of driftwood collected by Mellis on one of her 'hunts' along the shores of Southwold where she moved in 1976. A similar composition entitled 'Number Thirty Five' and dated 1983 is in the Tate Collection (T04930).
