Du Plantier studied arithmetic, painting at the Julian Academy in Paris, trained in offices of an architect, and designed costumes for the Comédie Française, before eventually turning to interior design and becoming one of the foremost décorateurs of his time.
In addition to his simple yet elegant style, the restrained yet dramatic lines of his productions, he is also chiefly remembered for his avant-garde use of rich, sumptuous and unconventional materials, having used calfskin to upholster sofas, leather and copper to adorn tables and shelves, and furs with which to drape daybeds. A pair of appliques by Du Plantier dated 1948 was sold Christie's, Paris, 27 October 2004, lot 3 (EUR 49,350 including premium).
