Each with radially-veneered dished top with fluted edge, on a support formed as a canopy enclosing a seated Chinaman surrounded by four kneeling attendants, on winged sea-serpent feet, redecorated, stamped 'IMPOSTE DI CONSUMO SQUADRA DI VOLANTE 16038 SAN REMO'

Specialist note

These scalloped pagoda-fringed breakfast tables are conceived in the manner of antique alters and rest on Venus' dolphin feet, while their figurative Chinese-kiosk pillars evoke 'Pagode', or Oriental deity worship in the Indies. An engraving by B. Picart, Dissertion sur les Cérémonies Religieuse des Peuples de la Chine et du Japon, 1726-29, illustrates an Oriental deity similar to the ones found on these tables seated beneath a canopied altar flanked by attendants.
An almost identical pair of tables (one 20th century) supplied to The 2nd Viscount Rothermere (d. 1978), for Daylesford House, Gloucestershire, by John Fowler, was sold anonymously, Christie's, South Kensington, 6 October 2004, lot 222.
