Of Islamic shape on circular foot chased with ocean waves, body chased with mythological scene, scrolling handle with ivory insulators and paw join, hinged cover with scrolling finial, marked on base with oval mark for samples, no. 5187

Specialist note

According to Gorham scholar, Sam Hough, this coffee pot was produced in November 1893 either as a prototype or for special exhibition. This one-of-a-kind object required over 125 hours to chase, at a cost of $180. By comparison, far less time was spent chasing many of the Martele black coffee pots that were produced just a few years later.
