Specialist note

Erfurth's touching double portrait, with the two heads isolated in an indeterminate space and gazing in opposite directions, calls to mind Chagall's own visual devices and his delight in setting his subjects afloat, weightless within the dream-like spaces of his pictures (fig.1).
