Frank Henry Shapleigh (1842-1906)

The present painting is said to depict the old Plaza Hotel in Saint Augustine, Florida. Built circa 1788 on the southwest corner of Aviles Street (then Hospital Street) and King Street, the building was owned by Venancio Sanchez during the mid-nineteenth century, and was eventually torn down by the end of the 1880s. The view in the present work looks to the northwest across the Plaza de la Constitucion, with the Catholic Cathedral in the distance.
