Specialist note

Roberts first travelled to Spain in 1832 and was one of the first British painters to discover picturesque towns such as Granada, Cordoba and their surrounding countryside. Roberts was fascinated and excited to see the Alhambra and executed numerous sketches, describing in letters to home the many pleasant days he spent in painting views of the old Moorish Palace in Granada.
