Specialist note
During the late 1950s Johnstone painted a series of large canvases grouped as Northern Gothic which are predominantly black, where the brush is used in a broad and spontaneous manner to create an uneven surface, oftern superimposed over an underlying form of blended colour.
Although this painting is of a later date, we are clearly reminded of the powerful effect of depth achieved in this series.
