Specialist note

Cassatt, Degas, Pissarro, and other Impressionists exhibited signed state impressions, such as this, along with final states. Prominent scholars of Impressionist prints have accepted this as an indication that artists felt their state impressions to be variations on a theme, rather than unfinished compositions (see Mathews and Shapiro, p. 28, 30-31).
