A RARE FRENCH GOLD, ENAMEL AND GEM-SET DAGGER IN SCABBARD
CIRCA 1750
The scabbard and dagger handle finely enamelled on both sides over chased gold flowers, scrolls and rocaille against a matted ground; the dagger with steel blade, the front of scabbard and handle set with large diamonds and rubies in rocaille mounts, apparently unmarked
13½ in. (34.3 cm.) long

Christie's, New York, 5 October 1983, lot 285

Specialist note

A gold and enamel dagger apparently from the same workshop, although without jewels, was sold from the Arturo Lopez-Willshaw Collection, Sotheby's, London, June 10, 1974, lot 7. The elaborate gem-set mounts on the present example indicates that it was made for the Turkish market.
