Specialist note

The arrival of the English Admiralty or Royal Yacht off Amsterdam is almost certainly connected to the additional diplomatic activity resulting from the marriage of King George II's daughter Anne, the Princess Royal (1709-59), to William IV, Prince of Orange (1711-51), in 1734. After her marriage, Anne took up residence at The Hague but received frequent visits from members of her family as well as ambassadors and other notables.

This charming pair of Dutch works are very much in the style of Ludolf Bakhuizen (1631-1708). Bakhuizen was a contemporary of van de Velde, the Younger (1633-1707) and was extremely popular in his lifetime. His influence can be seen throughout Dutch marine painting in the eighteenth century.
