Specialist note

The searching, wiry line of this drawing can be compared to a study now in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, made in preparation for Baglione's fresco Birth of the Virgin painted in the apse of S. Maria dell'Orto, Rome, and completed in 1598 (M. Smith O'Neil, 'Cavaliere Giovanni Baglione: "Il Modo Eccellente di Disegnare"', Master Drawings, XXXVI (1998), p. 367, fig. 14).
