Supplied to John Russell, 6th Duke of Bedford (1766-1839) for Endsleigh, Devon and by descent at Endsleigh to
The Endsleigh Fishing Club who purchased Endsleigh in 1962.
Sold by The Endsleigh Fishing Club and Endsleigh Charitable Trust, Christie's house sale at Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire 'Property from Two Ducal Collections', 21 September 2004, lot 901, when bought by the present owner.

Specialist note

Designed as rustic tripod-altars and constructed in elm-branches in the style of Jeffry Wyatt's 'Swiss Cottage' at Endsleigh, it is possible that they can be identified with the '2 fancy wood stools' inventoried in 1839 in Endsleigh's 'Fisherman's Cottage'.
