Two oval wine-coolers with the same pattern of lion-mask ring-handle and with stands with fluted tapering legs were supplied to William, 5th Earl of Dumfries for Dumfries House, Ayrshire in 1763 by Thomas Chippendale (d. 1779). They were invoiced as 'To 2 mahogany Oval Cisterns with brass hoops & handles' (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol. I, pp. 139, and vol. II, pp. 78-9, pls. 121-3).
