ATTRIBUTED TO GILLOWS, CIRCA 1789
Crossbanded overall in rosewood and inlaid with boxwood lines, the shaped rectangular eared top with canted angles, above a mahogany slide and three graduated panelled drawers with oval handles cast with oval paterae, above slightly-splayed legs, with remains of a paper label 'A & N.C.S.L. No. HANKEY/Sept. 1923', the metalwork original

This serpentine commode is closely related to a design by Gillows dated 1789 and illustrated in L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, London, 1995, fig. 117. A related serpentine commode was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 14 June 2001, lot 196 (£28,200).
