Château Margaux 1928
Margaux, 1er cru classé
One believed 1928. Scuffed capsules, one damaged. Remains of badly bin soiled labels. Levels: mid-shoulder
Tasting note: Eight notes. Slight bottle variation but mainly very good: deeply coloured; sweet, singed, cedary, fragrant bouquet; ‘sweet, tanned and tannic’. This was the first time (in 1976) I used the expression ‘iron fist in a velvet glove’. To demonstrate that not all the 1928s in San Juan were below par, the Margaux was superb, a ‘mouthfilling powerhouse’. Most recent: rather too sweet and caramelly; rich yet still very tannic. Last noted at Manfred Wagner’s tasting in Zurich, Nov 2000. At best ***** M.B.
