Nastri di fumo si arricciano attorno alla bocca lussuriosa ritratta nell'opera Smoker Study di Tom Wesselmann. Il soggetto, con gli occhi chiusi e la testa reclinata, emerge dal bianco della tela e pare colto in uno stato di quasi estasi. Dipinto nel 1977, Smoker Study è un esempio erotico e sensuale della serie dei famosi Smokers di Wesselmann, sviluppatasi come emanazione dei suoi Great American Nudes realizzati negli anni Sessanta. In questi primi dipinti l'artista accostava immagini di consumo, quali lattine di Coca Cola e confezioni di prodotti, con donne nude abbandonate in un lezioso languore. Wesselmann individuò questa ispirazione quando una delle sue modelle fece una pausa per fumare: fu allora che si sentì attratto dall'estetica del fumo. Non è quindi un caso che la serie Smokers si caratterizzi per un'accentuata sensualità tanto da diventare l'icona erotica del Pop americano. Tuttavia, se nel momento chiave del loro successo queste bocche fumanti venivano realizzate su tele di dimensioni enormi, quasi fossero cartelloni pubblicitari, è altrettanto vero che il presente lavoro si differenzia per essere la rappresentazione dello stesso motivo in una versione più intima.
Ribbons of smoke curl from a luscious mouth in Tom Wesselmann's Smoker Study. Emerging from the whiteness of the surrounding canvas, the subject appears in a state of near ecstasy, her eyes closed and head reclined. Painted in 1977, Smoker Study is an erotic, sultry example of Wesselmann's celebrated Smokers, a series which developed from his Great American Nudes of the 1960s. In these earlier paintings, Wesselmann combined consumer imagery - cans of Coca Cola and product packages, among others - with nude women lounging in blissful languor. Inspiration hit when one of his models took a cigarette break, and the artist found himself drawn to the aesthetics of smoking itself. Indeed, the Smokers offer the ultimate sensual distillation and have come to be understood as the erotic icons of American Pop. At their largest, these smoking mouths appeared on canvases the size of billboards: the present work is an intimate rendering of the same suggestive motif.
