Lange’s stunningly attractive and visually compelling ‘Zeitwerk Date’ in 18k white gold, reference 148.038, was introduced in 2019 for the tenth anniversary of the original Zeitwerk model, Lange’s first wristwatch with a ‘digital’ time display. With an impressive 44 mm. diameter case with sapphire crystal display back to view the phenomenal technical prowess of the constant-force escapement and finish of the movement, it has a tremendous presence on wrist and an aesthetic that is pure Lange classic styling with grey solid silver dial and Lange’s unmistakable big apertures for the precisely jumping hours and minutes. The hours can be separately advanced via a pusher in the band at 4 o’clock. Further dial indications are for large seconds and power-reserve sector.
The peripheral date ring of the Zeitwerk Date is made of glass with printed numbers from 1 to 31 and the current date is shown highlighted in red. This ingenious arrangement allows the date to be easily read without any interference to the other dial displays. The date changes exactly at midnight and can be manually changed by the pusher in the band at 8 o’clock.
The constant-force escapement is essentially a system that provides the escapement with a consistent power supply that is not affected by the state of wind of the watch, fully wound or almost unwound, timekeeping is unaffected. The constant-force escapement used in Lange’s Zeitwerk models not only provides a consistent power to the escapement but it is also the mechanism by which the power needed to advance the jumping numerals is produced. For a brief moment every 60 seconds, the full power of the mainspring is released and the resulting strong burst of energy is used to change the hours and minutes numeral discs. The re-tensioning cycle then immediately begins again.
