專家說明

“Los Angeles has always been a great city for artists and Jean-Michel seemed to find it a refreshing change from New York.” – Larry Gagosian

There is something of a reunion happening in Los Angeles, where Gagosian Gallery is bringing together Jean-Michel Basquiat’s works exclusively created in Venice, California. The exhibition Made on Market Street culminates the hundreds of paintings, prints, and silkscreen editions that Basquiat crafted between 1982 and 1984. In the 1980s, Basquiat’s native New York was in a politically turbulent period. Perhaps the artist sought refuge in Los Angeles.
The screenprint Hollywood Africans in front of the Chinese Theatre with Footprints of Movie Stars is thematically related to the iconography in one of Basquiat’s most well-known paintings of this era, Hollywood Africans, owned by the Whitney Museum of Art. Viewers can recognize Basquiat’s artist friends in both the painting and in this edition of 60: Toxic and Rammellzee.
