PATRICK CAULFIELD, R.A. (1936-2005)

Wine Glasses on a Table relates to Caulfield's print Black and White Café, which he made as part of a set of prints by various artists in various media, published by the Mark Rothko Memorial Trust in 1973. This included prints by Bridget Riley, Victor Pasmore and Henry Moore, among others.

When making his prints, Caulfield's practice was to paint full-size 'maquettes', such as the present work. Caulfield wished to control the precise appearance of the print, and by creating these paintings the printers were able to replicate them precisely in detail and tone. Caulfield considered them to be complete paintings in their own right.
