The artist, probably bequeathed by him with the rest of his studio to Isaac Grassineau; probably in the sale of the contents of the Chéron studio, Covent Garden, London, 1726.

While the present sheet cannot be related to any surviving painting by the artist, three paintings depicting Tobias and the Angel are recorded in one of the sales of Chéron’s estate in 1726 (Francis Russell, ‘Louis Chéron, a sale catalogue’, The Burlington Magazine, CXXX, June 1988, pp. 465-466).
