Dear Mr. Shukla:
I am sending you your painting and your album.
I wrote on the portrait two lines by the great poet Tu Fu (杜甫) which can be translated as follows:
"Sleepless, worrying about the war; But powerless to set the world right."
I want to thank you for coming to make this portrait of me.

蘇可拉先生

印度藝術家蘇可拉先生於1907年在印度出生，於孟買習美術，1934年赴義大利進修，入羅馬皇家藝術學院習版畫，以優異成績畢業，遂返國從事教育工作。1947年，考獲印度政府獎學金，赴中國研習美術，以促進中印兩國文化交流。他在1947年抵北平，先習中文，再轉入國立北平藝術專科學校，師事徐悲鴻、王青芳。翌年六月畢業，先後在北京大學和南京中央大學舉行畫展。
蘇可拉仰慕中國藝術，北平藝專求學期間，他結識多位中國藝術家，飽覽私人收藏，並與收藏家和藝術家一起討論，從而與齊白石、徐悲鴻等多位二十世紀重要藝術家結為好友。在他們的引導下，蘇氏開始收藏，並收藏了一批重要的現代中國畫。佳士得榮幸再度得到藝術家家屬的肯定，呈現數件蘇可拉先生於中國時期所收藏之書畫作品、信札、藝術家照片以及附有諸多畫家、學者簽名之藝術書籍。藏品中多數直接上款予蘇可拉先生，顯示出蘇可拉先生與這群藝術家之間的深厚交情。此收藏透過藝術家之間的互動，展示出中、印兩國在二十世紀上半葉藝術交流的歷史脈絡。
