This dramatic, moonlit scene is attributed to marine artist Thomas Chambers. A very similar work from the collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., gift of Edgar William and Bernice Chrysler Garbisch (1969.11.1) is illustrated in Kathleen A. Foster, Thomas Chambers: American Marine Landscape Painter, 1808-1869 (New Haven, 2008), p. 22. fig. 2-3.
