FOLLOWER OF SIR HENRY RAEBURN, R.A.

Formerly attributed to John James Masquerier, the present painting appears to be a variant of the Portrait of a Lady that was offered at Sotheby’s, London, 19 September 2019, lot 189, as “Attributed to John James Masquerier, R.A.”. Here, however, the shawl draped over the sitter’s forearms is absent. The version from the 2019 sale bears a label on its stretcher identifying the sitter as Mrs H.W. Lauzun, whose portrait, painted by Sir Henry Raeburn, is today in the Tate, London.
