專家說明
'The Latin text is from St Thomas Aquinas, 'All being is derived from the divine beauty … nothing is in the mind, unless first in the senses'. The English is from the translation of the Roman de la Rose, attributed to Chaucer. The inscription was made for Clarissa, Lady Avon, whose name appears in Greek letters at the lower edge of the work. The present work is one of a group of inscriptions made at about this date for friends, all are comparatively small." (Exhibition catalogue, David Jones, London, Tate Gallery, p. 133)
