Disparue tragiquement en 2015, Hema Upadhyay était une artiste indienne basée à Mumbai qui puisait dans son environnement et son histoire personnelle pour interroger les notions d'identité à l’épreuve des migrations, tout en soulevant des questions sociales et économiques. Sa maîtrise de diverses techniques artistiques a été révélée par les Beaux-Arts de Paris en 2005 puis à la Serpentine Gallery de Londres à l’hiver 2008; elle a été suivie d’expositions à Oslo et Herning qui lui ont assuré sa renommée européenne. En 2011, elle fait partie de l'exposition Paris-Delhi-Bombay organisée par le Centre Pompidou. Son œuvre a également été exposé au Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (Pékin), au Macro (Rome), au Chicago Cultural Center ou encore au Mori Art Museum et à la Japan Foundation (Tokyo). Upadhyay est l’une des incarnations féminines les plus significatives de l'activisme dans l'art contemporain indien.
Tragically departed in 2015, Hema Upadhyay was a Mumbai-based Indian artist who drew on her environment and personal history to interrogate notions of identity in the face of migration, while raising social and economic issues. Her mastery of various artistic techniques was revealed by the Beaux-Arts of Paris in 2005 and then at the Serpentine Gallery in London during the winter of 2008, followed by exhibitions in Oslo and Herning which ensured her European reputation. In 2011, she was included in the Paris-Delhi-Bombay exhibition organised by the Centre Pompidou and has also been exhibited at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (Beijing), the Macro (Rome), the Chicago Cultural Center, the Mori Art Museum and the Japan Foundation (Tokyo).
