Camille Pissarro (1830-1903)

"De tous les lieux où Pissarro a vécu et travaillé, Montfoucault est resté préservé des atteintes du temps. Le hameau, au bord du petit étang où venaient s'abreuver les vaches et les moutons a conservé son charme d'antan. Même le puits est là, surmonté de son petit toit, semblant attendre qu'une paysanne vienne y jeter son seau" (cité in J. Pissarro et C. Durand-Ruel Snollaerts, ibid, p. 89).

"None of the places where Pissarro lived and worked has been as well protected from the outslaught of time as Montfoucault. The hamlet, which stands on the edge of a small pond where cattle and sheep came to water in Pissarro's day, has lost none of its charm. Even the old well is still here, crowned by its diminutive roof, looking for all the world as if a peasant girl were about to come and lower her pail into it (quoted in J. Pissarro et C.
