Olim, Malvasia 1870
Maderia
Bottled from cask in 2019. New wax capsules with GD seal. New stencilling. Levels: into-neck
Tasting note: April 2019. Strong high-toned nose with balsamic aromas, quite volatile. Rich concentrated fruits with banana leaf, old oak, dark honey-cake and furniture wax on the second nose. Clearly a long cask aged wine with deep intense flavors.
Sweet dried apricot fruit on the attack, very rich even for a Malvasia. Lots of grip and concentration, still there is freshness and liveliness. So unique to taste a wine that has been aged in cask for about a century and still have this pure fruit flavors as well as a pleasure giving drinkability.
On the finish you sense the extracts and some bitters that goes on and on, finally there is a dried apricot aroma with Indian spices that just keep on singing in your mouth. Remarkable balance and sweetness for a wine of this concentration.
Must already have been a great wine to start with. A Malvasia powerhouse. Impressive. Given the rarity of Malvasia in this period all the more remarkable to find a wine of this amazing quality.
January 2020: Dark iodine color. Super concentration. Fantastic mouth feel. Impressive. The sweet rich explosion of taste. Great. In line with previous notes
Then most recently during a rainy summers day. At first a direct expression of blueberries, cassis, vanilla jumping from the glass. Almost in the style of a Chilean Cab. With some air spicy notes appear from the pure fruit now completing the aroma palette to a well concentrated impressive nose.
The taste gets going with a seductive slightly rich start followed by a wave of rich fruit filling your mouth. Strong concentration now more tempered and suave. Still high and extract rich yet all so well integrated. This is fantastic wine.
A diamond now being smoothened by the bottle aging. Bravo. Last tasted August 2021. Edwin Vos
