Prud’hon drew this beautifully-executed vignette for a re-edition of the works of Pierre Corneille, including his translation of The Imitation of Jesus Christ by Thomas a Kempis, published in 1817 by Antoine-Augustin Renouard. An engraving of this drawing, whose composition was printed in inverse, was created by Prud’hon’s student and favorite engraver, Barthélémy Roger.
Prud’hon worked with Renouard multiple times on illustrations for publications. Two other drawings of similar size, also engraved by Roger, were shown at the Prud’hon 1997-1998 monographic exhibition: The Deliverance of Anthia, for the Italian translation of Xenophon of Ephesus’s Ephesian Tale (coll part; S. Laveissière, Prud’hon ou le rêve du bonheur, exhib. cat., Paris, Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais, and New York, Metropolitan Museum of Arts, 1997-1998, n°78) and The Bath, the frontispiece for the Italian edition of Daphnis and Chloe, both of which were published in 1800 (Cambridge, Harvard University, inv. FLH 529 ; op. cit., n° 79).
