WORKSHOP OF FILIPPINO LIPPI (PRATO C.1457-1504 FLORENCE)

Though thought to be the work of a follower of Lippi at the time of its sale in 2018, a recent cleaning of this panel has enabled for a reappraisal of the picture’s surface and for the quality of the artist’s handling to be better understood.

Christopher Daly, to whom we are grateful, reinstates it as a work from Lippi's workshop (on the basis of photographs). He accords the picture a position of real interest in its close relationship to a late autograph work by the artist, formerly in the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum in Berlin, which was destroyed during the Second World War. Daly notes that as the lost work is only known through through black and white photographs, the present workshop picture provides valuable evidence of its original colouring.
