專家說明
Jean-Baptiste III Lelarge, maître in 1775.
The SC GM brand on these bergères is thought to be that of the Garde Meuble of Louis Philippe, Duc d’Orléans (1747-1793) at the Château de Saint Cloud, before he sold the château to the crown in 1785. A massive canapé with the same brand, also by Lelarge and formerly in the Wrightsman Collection was sold The Collection of Mr. & Mrs. John H. Gutfreund: 834 Fifth Avenue, Christie's, New York, 26-27 January 2021, lot 143 ($75,000).
The Château de Saint Cloud, the country house of the Gondi family, was bought in 1658 by Philippe d'Orléans, Louis XIV's brother. He appointed the architect Jules Hardoin Mansart who built one of the most beautiful palaces on the outskirts of Paris that was also admired for its gardens. Throughout the eighteenth century it remained the principal country residence of the Orléans family until it was bought in 1785 by Louis XVI in Marie-Antoinette’s name from Philippe, duc d'Orlèans. It was unique among the royal châteaux in that it was the Queen's personal property. Marie-Antoinette’s time at Saint-Cloud was sadly brief, as in October 1789 the Royal family was forced to make a hasty departure from Versailles and moved to the Tuileries. Saint Cloud became the property of the nation in 1792 and the contents dispersed at auction. Saint Cloud later became one of Napoleon's favorite residences and was the site of many important state events until its destruction in 1870.
