The celebrated house of Tiffany & Co. has always retailed timepieces from different manufacturers, notably Rolex, ranging from the Submariners and GMT-Masters to the Cosmograph Daytona. As of the late 1950s, watches sold by the New York based firm proudly featured its name on the dial.
The present ref. 1680 is a particularly attractive example of this highly popular species, featuring a wide range of period accessories, notably the original punched Guarantee stamped by Tiffany & Co., and the original value estimation on Tiffany’s watermarked stationary, all rarities by themselves.
It is furthermore preserved in very good overall condition, the luminous accents on the dial have aged to an attractive uniform ivory tone, the case displays strong proportions.
Rolex's first Submariner with date, the reference 1680, was introduced in 1968 and encountered immediate success. Collectors are making a distinction between a reference 1680 with red writing on the dial and a reference 1680 with all-white writing. Both dial versions are subdivided into series called "Mark". The present MK 4 dial features the open six on the depth rating and a shifted to the left "L" in the name ROLEX in respect to the base of the crown symbol.
