Pour Hundertwasser, artiste pluridisciplinaire tour à tour peintre, architecte ou performeur, « la ligne droite est athée et immorale ». Tout chez lui s’enroule et se déroule selon un agencement de l’espace en courbes et spirales. Ici, de part et d’autre d’une ligne de flottaison bleue qui tangue et parcourt la surface de gauche à droite, un Bateau phénicien déploie l’arrondi de sa coque dans un camaïeu de tons vifs – vert, orange, jaune, rose – souligné par une application de peinture dorée. Arrière et premier plans se confondent dans un réseau de traits qui se chevauchent et se contorsionnent comme autant de clapotis sur lesquels l’œil vient ricocher. Navigateurs hors pairs, les Phéniciens ont abondamment exploré le pourtour méditerranéen, et peut-être Hundertwasser s’est-il reconnu dans cette civilisation maritime, lui qui fit l’acquisition d’un vieux voilier en bois, qu’il restaura à Venise avant de le rebaptiser Regentag, et à bord duquel il arpenta à son tour les côtes de l’Adriatique.
Le recours à l’arrondi relève chez l’artiste d’une démarche philosophique : la sinuosité des courbes épouse les contours mêmes de la vie, contrairement à la morbide rigidité géométrique des lignes droites. En cela, le peintre fait sien le principe kantien selon lequel « dans un bois aussi courbe que celui dont est fait l'homme, on ne peut rien tailler de tout à fait droit ». Prônant une symbiose totale avec la nature, Hundertwasser utilise par conséquent son art – ses peintures comme ses réalisations architecturales – pour reconnecter l’homme à son environnement. Avec sa palette éclatante et ses proportions sphériques où chaque élément paraît danser dans l’espace, Bateau phénicien s’inscrit en plein dans cette entreprise de réenchantement du monde.
Hundertwasser, a multidisciplinary artist by turns painter, architect and performer, pronounced that “the straight line is atheistic and immoral”. His is a world where space is patterned into curves and spirals, coiling and unfurling around themselves. Here, intersected by a wavy blue waterline that undulates across the surface from left to right, a Phoenician Ship flaunts its chubby hull in an array of vibrant tones – green, orange, yellow, deep pink – accentuated by the application of gold paint. Background, middle- and foreground merge together in a lattice of wavy lines that lap and squirm over each other in ripples, so your eyes can only ricochet off. The Phoenicians were outstanding navigators and prolific explorers of the Mediterranean coastline.Perhaps Hundertwasser saw something of himself in this seafaring civilisation, having bought an old wooden sailboat that he restored in Venice before rechristening it Regentag and setting sail on it to survey the Adriatic coast.
The artist’s use of rounded shapes is a philosophical approach, in that the sinuousness of curves traces the very contours of life, in stark opposition to the morbid geometric rigidity of straight lines. In this, he is embracing Kant’s principle: “from such crooked wood as that which man is made of, nothing straight can be fashioned”. Hundertwasser advocates complete symbiosis with nature, using his art – both his paintings and his architectural constructions – to reconnect humans to their environment. With its vivid palette and spherical proportions where every element seems to be dancing in space, Phoenician Ship perfectly illustrates this quest to re-inject natural wonder into the world.
