Peint vers 1960, Ciel Hyperxiologique fait partie d’une série de peintures mystiques importantes autour du sujet du Christ et de la Passion sur laquelle travaille Dalí à la fin des années 1950 et au début des années 1960. Ces œuvres développent la fameuse philosophie axée sur la mystique nucléaire de Dalí, qu’il expose pour la première fois en 1952 dans son manifeste. Elles associent des principes empruntés à la science atomique, à la peinture classique, au catholicisme romain et aux mysticismes espagnol et catalan, au sein d’une vision du monde véritablement unique et distinctement dalinienne.
Alors que Dalí entreprenait ses nombrables huiles consacrées à Sainte Marie Madeleine, l’artiste développait egalement de nouvelles explorations techniques, dans un cadre esthétique classique, dans lesquelles il utilisa de véritables dents et clous collés à la toile.
L’utilisation des clous apparaît dans de nombreuses œuvres de Dalí à cette époque et tout particulièrement dans la présente oeuvre qui présente des clous qui viennent contraster avec le ciel, référence directe à une description faite par le philosophe catalan Francesc Pujols, créateur d’une religion basée sur la science nommée l’«Hiparxiologie» (Science de l’existence). Dalí, qui est grandement influencé par le philosophe, réalisera d’ailleurs une statue en son honneur devant son propre théâtre-musée de Figueres. Ici, l’association visuellement saisissante d’un ciel percé de clous fonctionne à plusieurs niveaux. Malgré son regain d’intérêt pour le catholicisme et son évocation des articles de foi et des rituels chrétiens, Dalí reste lui-même plus un adepte du mysticisme espagnol qu’un fervent catholique, convaincu que le paradis se trouve au centre de la poitrine de chaque individu. Dans cette œuvre, cette conviction semble trouver son expression dans le corps céleste de Marie Madeleine qui, paraissant ouvrir un chemin vers le paradis en son sein, est simultanément pénétrée par les instruments de la passion du Christ.
Fidèle à la description de Pujols de cette substance céleste à l’origine «colloïdale», Dalí offre une interprétation à la fois érotique et mystique du continuum espace/ temps de l’univers, qu’il décrit ici en fait comme une entité limitée, matérielle et même corporelle, resituant en nous-mêmes le mystère divin de la création.

Painted circa 1960, Ciel Hyperxiologique is one of a series of important mystical paintings on the subject of Christ and the Passion which Dalí made in the late 1950s and early '60s. These works expanded upon Dalí's much-vaunted philosophy of Nuclear Mysticism that the artist had first expounded in his 1952 manifesto and combined selected tenets of atomic science, classical painting, Roman Catholicism and Spanish and Catalan mysticism into a unique and distinctly Dalinan vision of the world.
When Dalí was working on his many oil paintings revolving around the figure of Saint Mary Magdalene, the artist was also exploring new techniques, within a classical aesthetic context, which involved using real teeth and nails stuck onto a canvas.
Dalí's use of nails features in many of his works at this time, most notably in our work - a work intermingling the contrasting elements of nails and the sky that refers directly to a description given by the Catalan philosopher Francesc Pujols, who had invented a science-based religion known as "hyperxiology". Dalí was greatly influenced by Pujols, even later in life, building and dedicating a statue to the philosopher outside his own theatre/museum in Figueres. Here, in this work, the startling visual combination of a sky penetrated by nails operates on many levels. Despite his renewed interest in Catholicism and his invoking of Christian articles of faith and ritual, Dalí himself remained, at heart, more of a Spanish mystic than a devout Catholic, and his ultimate conviction remained that heaven was situated in the centre of one's own chest. In this work, this conviction appears to be expressed through the celestial body of Mary Magdelene which, seeming to open a pathway to heaven within itself, is simultaneously penetrated by the instruments of Christ's Passion.
Following Pujol's description of this celestial substance as being of "colloidal" origin, Dalí, typically, gives both an erotic and mystical interpretation of the space/time continuum of the universe, revealing it here to be in fact a finite, material and even corporeal entity, expressing the divine mystery at the heart of creation as one that ultimately lies within ourselves.
