En 1955, un an après que Max Ernst reçoit le Grand Prix de peinture à la Biennale de Venise, l’artiste s’installe avec son épouse Dorothea Tanning dans une ferme à Huismes, dans la vallée de la Loire, lieu où ils élirent domicile pour la décennie suivante. À Huismes, Ernst utilise les débris agricoles qu’il glane dans les détritus des fermes voisines pour créer une série d’assemblages sculpturaux de plus en plus audacieux qui ne sont pas sans rappeler les célèbres bricolages que Picasso avait réalisé à Vallauris plus tôt dans les années 1950. Comme l’ensemble de son œuvre, les sculptures d’Ernst présentent une vision du cosmos pleine de découverte» (cité in Max Ernst: Rétrospective, cat. exp., Albertina Museum, Vienne, 2013, p. 296).
Si la présente sculpture fut au départ conçue comme un assemblage unique crée par l’artiste en 1964, elle fut fondue en bronze dès la même année. L’élément central de la composition est un dispositif en bois utilisé pour harnacher un cheval ou un bœuf à une charrue, dont les tiges courbées peuvent s’élever jusqu’à plus de deux mètres. Les deux barres croisées sont insérées dans une planche étroite, finement sciée et fixée verticalement dans une base en bois. Un roulement de roue en fer est monté sur l’extrémité supérieure de la planche et une paire de chaînes, jointes par un anneau, pend entre les très hauts mancherons de charrue. Ces différents éléments assemblés par l’artiste suggèrent une créature dont l’apparence est proche de celle d’une stèle, grande et austère, qui transperce l’observateur de ses yeux ronds et de sa bouche ouverte. In Sedona in 1946, Ernst began to produce minuscule gouaches known as Microbes, using the technique of decalcomania (applying pigment to one sheet and then pressing it against another), with its overtones of surrealist automatism. The resulting images evoke the vast canyons and rock formations of the Arizona landscape, compressed into tiny format. In 1953, Ernst compiled seven of these into a small book entitled Sept microbes vus à travers un tempérament, with each painting serving as the accompaniment to a poem. The latter part of the title is a reference to the celebrated phrase of Zola: "Une œuvre d'art est un coin de la création vu à travers un tempérament". A corner of the creation, in other words--a mere part of nature, a microbe even--is sufficient to enable the artist to develop his own, internally consistent, autonomous realm of visual forms.
