Dans une composition reprenant le motif de deux oiseaux entrelacés dans un arrière-plan texturé, exécuté à l'huile et au sable, et présentée dans le cadre de l'artiste, Oiseaux s'inscrit dans une période charnière de la carrière de Max Ernst, tant d’un point de vue personnel que professionnel. Établi à Paris depuis 1922, l'artiste peut enfin vivre exclusivement de son art en 1925 après avoir signé la même année un contrat avec Jacques Viot et établi son atelier au 22 rue Tourlaque. C'est également en 1925 que l'artiste invente sa technique d'art graphique révolutionnaire si emblématique, le «frottage», bientôt suivi du «grattage» dont le chef d'œuvre Forêt et Colombe datant de 1927 et conservé à la Tate Modern à Londres en est l'exemple le plus manifeste. Plusieurs créatures identifiables, nées de l’inconscient de l'artiste, ont par ailleurs commencé à définir le vocabulaire pictural d’Ernst, l’une des principales étant la figure d’un oiseau. Ernst finira par créer son mystérieux alter ego à partir de cette figure, appelée «Loplop», une créature mi-homme, mi-oiseau.
La présente œuvre s'inscrit dans la série d'œuvres que Max Ernst exécute en 1924-25 dans lesquelles l'artiste dépeint deux oiseaux, qui semblent emprisonnés ensemble et confinés dans un petit espace clos qui les empêche de déployer leurs ailes. La délicatesse de leurs formes et de leurs motifs, dévoilés par les techniques avant-gardistes de l'artiste, crée un fascinant contraste avec la touche texturée de l'arrière-plan sableux et le cadre de l'artiste en liège.
Ce motif de l’oiseau prend une signification toute particulière pour Ernst en cela qu'il symbolise à la fois l'amour et la mort, et ce depuis l'enfance de l'artiste. Dans une grande confusion des sentiments suite au décès de son animal domestique préféré
- un oiseau nommé Horneborn - qui coïncida presque avec la naissance de sa sœur Loni, le jeune Ernst fit vraisemblablement un lien inconscient entre l'homme et l'oiseau et entre l'amour et la mort.
Depicting two confined love-birds in oil on a sandpaper ground surrounded by the artist's frame, Oiseaux was painted at a pivotal time in Ernst’s career, both from a personal and professional perspective. Having settled in Paris in 1922, by 1925 Ernst could finally rely solely on his art as a source of income following his contract with Jacques Viot and the establishment of his studio, at 22 rue Tourlaque that same year. 1925 also marked the year in which Ernst’s revolutionary and signature graphic art technique was invented, that of "frottage" soon followed by that of "grattage", epitomised in his masterpiece Forêt et Colombe of 1927 (Tate Modern, London). Furthermore, several recognisable creatures born from the artist’s unconscious started to define Ernst’s pictorial vocabulary, one of the most prominent being the figure of a bird. Ernst would ultimately create his mysterious alter-ego from the latter, known as "Loplop", a creature half bird, half man.
Many of Ernst’s 1924-25 paintings depict two birds, trapped together in close confinement where they are prevented from spreading their wings. The delicacy of their forms and of the pattern of their feathers is presented in sharp contrast to the heavy texture of the sandpaper ground and the strong cork boundary of the picture-frame.
Yet in 1925, the motif of the bird was limited to symbolising love and death, the origin of which goes back to Ernst’s childhood. As a young boy, Ernst had made a clear unconscious connection in his mind between people and birds, as well as between love and death, following the death of his favourite pet, a bird named Horneborn, the timing of which almost coincided with his sister Loni’s birth, leading to the child’s confusion in terms of feelings.
