De nombreux dessins d'animaux de Ridinger montrent ces créatures souvent représentées lors de la chasse. Dans ces dessins, l'esthétisme et la grâce du style contrastent avec la représentation de scènes cruelles préfigurant l'art de la période romantique. Cette oeuvre en est l'exemple parfait : la scène est représentée de manière très détaillée avec des traits à la fois gracieux et rapides où l’on peut observer une grande tension chez l'homme qui peine à maîtriser son chien sur le point d'attaquer le cerf en arrière-plan.

Many of Ridinger’s animal drawings focus on the nature of the creatures displayed, often in the act of hunting. In these sheets, the elegant style of the drawings contrasts with the cruel acts displayed and seems to foreshadow the art of the Romantic era to come. This sheet is an excellent example of this type of drawing; the scene is brought to life in meticulous, but pleasingly fluent penwork, yet great tension can be observed in the man barely able to control his dog which is about to attack the stag in the background.
