After Johann Moritz Rugendas

The present picture relates closely to Rugendas's canvas of the same size painted in Peru in 1843, following his departure from Chile (in the collection of Ricardo Claro, Santiago, for which see P. Diener, Rugendas 1802-1858, Augsburg, 1997, CH-0-9). The view is the same and the figures are almost identical, with the exception of the grey horse and rider added here in the right foreground.
