The first model of the celebrated “Daytona” series, reference 6239 succeeded reference 6238 and could be found in sales catalogues in Europe from 1964 onwards. Available in stainless steel, 14k and 18k gold, it was the firm’s first chronograph with tachometer scale engraved on the bezel and with subsidiary dials printed in a different colour than the main dial for better readability. The so-called Paul Newman dials soon became available for the reference 6239, in either two-coloured white/cream and black, or three-coloured, such as the present watch, and with the addition of the red seconds scales.

The rarity of the present watch is further enhanced not only by the well preserved case and dial but also by the incredibly rare dial variation nicknamed "Musketeer". Normally, the subdials of a Paul Newman dial have a concentric circle pattern. However this dial features a vessel-shaped subdial with the concentric circle only covering two-thirds of the subdial, similar to the dials of non Paul Newman dials from references 6239 and 6241.
