Vetta. A fine stainless steel chronograph wristwatch with multiscale dial

A pleasant sighting at auction, vintage chronographs from the 50s have always been appreciated by young and astute collectors. An attractive wristwatch, the present timepiece features a multiscale dial combined within a stainless steel case of 35 mm. diameter.

First named Wyler, the manufacture was known for producing timepieces with components improving the shock resistance or durability of their movements. The name Vetta came to existence during the 1930s, once Wyler started distributing their timepieces in Italy under the name of Wyler Vetta and later decided to shorten it for marketing purposes.

Tracing its history to Paul Wyler, the Basel watchmaker who pioneered the development of watch balances beginning in 1896 and patented the ‘Incaflex’ in 1927 for shock resistance, the company was also known for inventing the advertising testimonial when Wyler Vetta watches were first seen on the Italian Soccer team in 1934. The manufacture also promoted the durability and resistance of their watches through an advert in the 1950s showing a timepiece being thrown from the top of the Eiffel Tower.
