THÉODORE GÉRICAULT (ROUEN 1791-1824 PARIS)

Ce thème érotique de la femme enlacée par un homme a inspiré à Géricault plusieurs études, parfois dérivant vers Une nymphe et un satyre (Bazin, op. cit., nos. 1301-1319). Bazin décrira cette suite érotique comme ‘ce que Géricault a conçu de plus puissant dans l’esprit michelangélesque (ibid., p. 30). Ces études ne sont pas non plus sans rappeler les gravures de Marc-Antonio Raimondi d’après les dessins Jules Romain qui firent chasser ce dernier de Rome en 1524.

A woman embraced by a man is a subject often found in Géricault’s erotic drawings, the figures sometimes in the guise of a nymph and a satyr (Bazin, op. cit., nos. 1301-1319). Bazin described these erotic works as ‘the most powerful works Géricault made in the spirit of Michelangelo’ (op. cit., p. 30). The studies also bring to mind Marcantonio Raimondi’s engravings after Giulio Romano, which caused the latter to flee Rome in 1524.
