“In 1995, Kiki Smith had an exhibition at PaceWildenstein gallery that included a work called Jersey Crows: about twenty cast-bronze dead crows scattered across the gallery floor, forcing viewers to walk among them to experience the exhibition. The piece was inspired by a news report about a flock of crows found dead in a meadow in New Jersey, probably from air-borne toxins. During the show, Kiki appeared in the gallery with a dead pigeon that she had found in Central Park, wrapped lovingly in a cloth. Showing it all around, she sweetly declared she was taking it home to make a drawing of the dead bird…this small drawing represents the characteristic that unifies all of the artist’s work; Kiki Smith’s poetic, but thoroughly material expression of nature, whether the body of a woman, animals (birds, wolves, cats or others) or the stars.” – Mildred Glimcher (Pace gallery, Arne’s wife), quoted in Don’t Look
