In 2016, to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the Reverso, undoubtedly the manufacture’s most iconic model, Jaeger-LeCoultre pays tribute to the renowned Belgian surrealist artist and philosopher René Magritte by introducing a series which features on the case back a lacquered engraving of one of his most famous and controversial paintings “The Treachery of Images”.

Painted in 1929 and now exhibiting in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the painting depicts naturalistically a common wooden pipe which floats solitarily against a neutral background, isolated except for a meticulously calligraphed sentence “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” (This is not a pipe) positioned underneath the pipe.  By referencing Magritte’s painting and its seemingly contradictory statement, Jaeger LeCoultre subtly draws attention to the dichotomy of the Reverso design which is a watch but is at the same time more than a watch and is often accompanied by effects of mirroring and concealment as in Magritte’s art. Produced in white gold in a 5-piece edition and a limited edition of 15 stainless steel examples of which the present watch is number 13, this “Magritte” Reverso combines world class horology with one of the most profound achievements of twentieth century modern art.
